After days of an horrific poo ponds pong, repairs are underway at the Shotover Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Council staff and contractors are on site attempting to resolve an issue with the sludge processing and dewatering system at the facility, says Queenstown Lakes District Council Property & Infrastructure GM Tony Avery.

"The system in need of maintenance is essential for keeping the biological processes that are responsible for the treatment of wastewater healthy" Avery says.

"I’d like to acknowledge and apologise for the odour that has been noticed around the Frankton area. We hope to have repairs in place and the smell under control as soon as possible."

QLDC is providing daily reports on smell coming from the facility to the Otago Regional Council’s (ORC) Pollution team.

Avery says the repairs are not related to the upgrades currently underway at the Shotover Wastewater Treatment Plant to improve wastewater capacity in the district.
