Queenstown's Alpine Aqualand will reopen on weekends once again from this Saturday, 1 April, with free hydroslides to mark the occasion.

The municipal swimming pools and hyrdroslides were closed for the past six weekends because there were not enough lifeguards employed by Queenstown Lakes District Council.

QLDC chose instead to staff the weekdays, when the majority of kids' lessons taking place on weekday afternoons.

Sport and Recreation Manager Simon Battrick says there's since been a successful campaign to recruit more lifeguards.

"It was a difficult decision to close in the first place and it’s fantastic to see our pool crew roster grow again," Battrick says.

"Swimming is such an essential skill and we appreciate how much families love coming here on the weekends to spend quality time together.

"We’re all looking forward to seeing a great turnout and welcoming everyone back at Alpine Aqualand!"

The hydroslides will be free to use this weekend – you’ll just need to pay standard pool entry. The hydroslides will be in operation on both Saturday and Sunday from 10.30am.

QLDC is still experiencing staff shortages across a number of aquatic roles. Whilst the lifeguard shortage is still being felt there have been enough applications and trainees to fully staff the week ahead.

Anyone interested in applying should head online to www.qldc.govt.nz/careers.
