Keen skiers and snowboarders took their first turns in Soho Basin on Saturday, kicking off a new era for Cardrona Alpine Resort.

Early-season conditions still exist, so the terrain was mostly ungroomed and for advanced level skiers and snowboarders only. But that didn't stop the excited first six from claiming their "Soho It Begins" t-shirts, the first to ever claim first chair on the new Soho Express.

"This is such a huge milestone for the Aotearoa ski industry," Cardrona and Treble Cone's Chief Mountains Officer, Laura Hedley, says.

"To get this lift and terrain open, after decades of dreaming of what could be... it's a pretty emotional moment for our entire team."

The chairlift opens up 150ha of new terrain, making Cardrona New Zealand's biggest ski area.
