Alpine ski racer Alice Robinson has finished in 8th place at the FIS Giant Slalom World Cup held in Italy overnight.
It's the top Giant Slalom World Cup result for the Queenstown 21-year-old since March 2021.
Robinson took command of the course with her trademark aggressive skiing. With her timing on point, she was able to generate huge amounts of power and take a tight line.
After run one Robinson was visibly pleased with her performance, sitting in 7th place, just +1.15 seconds behind current leader Mikaela Shiffrin (USA).
As the snowflakes began to fall, Robinson launched out of the start gate into her second run. She attacked the course with grit and determination, but a couple of scrappy turns resulted in valuable hundredths of seconds being lost.
Robinson finished in 8th place, +2.12 second behind winner Mikaela Shiffrin of the USA. This marked Shiffrin’s 83rd World Cup win and the incredible title of the most successful female ski racer in history. Lara Gut-Behrami (SUI) finished in second place, with Federica Brignone (ITA) rounding out the podium in third.
After a challenging 2021/22 season, Robinson swapped to a new equipment brand prior to the 2022 New Zealand season and has been working hard with her team maximise the performance of the equipment. Her hard work now appears to be paying off.
Robinson will be in action again Wednesday night from 10.30pm NZT in the second Giant Slalom race to be held on the course in Kronplatz Italy.
