Work to upgrade the electricity network at the Cromwell end of Kawarau Gorge means there will be temporary road closures tomorrow, Thursday, 16 March.

Travellers are warned this could add an extra 30 minutes to their travel time along State Highway 6 from Queenstown through to Cromwell, to allow for the various traffic management sites beyond Roaring Meg power station.

Aurora Energy is replacing five power poles and one cross arm along SH6, starting from the Pearson Rd intersection on the outskirts of Cromwell, and spanning 9km towards the Roaring Meg power station.

"There will be an increase in the number of vehicles in the area and traffic management in place. Please obey all traffic management signs and instruction," an Aurora spokesperson says.

There will also be helicopter activity in the area during this time.

"Aurora Energy thanks customers for their patience while this important work is being carried out."
