The Remarkables plans to open its learners slopes tomorrow, but Coronet Peak will remain closed.

NZSki had hoped to begin Queenstown ski season 2024 with both skifields open on Saturday, 15 June.

But the weather hasn't played ball.

Remarks skifield area manager Steve Hall says: "I'm stoked to say that we are going to be open tomorrow as scheduled, Saturday, 15 June.

"The team, snowmakers and the groomers, have been working really hard as you can see. It's going to be a limited opening on our learners area, our Tahi, Rua & Shorty conveyors.

"We're going to have transport, we're going to have guest services, rentals, retail, café, snow sports, all up and running. So actually, really excited. It's great to get the winter underway. So come on up, have a look, have a ski. It's going to be good to have you at The Remarkables this winter."

The Remarks snow report says rhe Queenstown skifield has had 10cm of snowfall over the past week and the snow base is 1cm to 10cm.

"We will look to open more terrain and lifts as snowmaking and weather allow," it reads.

Coronet Peak skifield area manager Nigel Kerr broke the disappointing news to skiers and boarders via a Facebook video this afternoon.

"We won't be opening tomorrow," he said. "We are winter ready. Look around. You can see the snow the decks all set. We've been working really hard with the snow making, we just need a couple more centimetres to join it all up."

He told snow hounds to check the snow report over the coming days.

"We're going to take the weekend on hold, looking to get going early next week, and if we do get going, we're looking to put Express, Meadows and a couple of carpets all on, so it will be worth it.

"Keep the snow dancers coming, and we'll see you soon."

Cardrona Alpine Resort, operated by RealNZ, plans a limited opening on Saturday with the the learner conveyors and the McDougall’s Chondola operating.
