Frankton man Thomas George Murdoch has been named as the victim of a fatal crash near Queenstown on Thursday, 30 January.

The 29-year-old died in the single-vehicle crash at Fairlight, just beyond Kingston, in Southland, police have confirmed today.

"Our thoughts are with those close to him at this time," Senior Sergeant Pete Graham says.

Inquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.

It happened about 10pm at night and was described as "an unfortunate 4WD accident" in his obituary in The Southland Times.

His Facebook page shows pictures of a 80 Series Toyota Land Cruiser, with off-road modifications.

"Tom passed away doing what he loved, in an unfortunate 4WD accident on Thursday, January 30, 2025, aged 29 years," the obituary reads.

"Fun loving adventurous son of Maxine and Bruce and loved by his brother Benji. Loyal companion of his dog Wallace, loved by all his extended family. Best friend to Mason Brookes, and great mate to all his friends and work colleagues."

"Special thank you to Search and Rescue and Queenstown Police for their help with Tom, your support has been very much appreciated."

A service to celebrate Tom's life will be held in City Impact Church, 3 Hansen Road, Queenstown, on Friday, February 7 at 11am.
