Just three months into the role, Arrowtown-Kawarau Ward councillor Neeta Shetty has resigned from Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) with immediate effect.

Shetty confirmed she was standing down for personal reasons which made continuing in the position untenable.

She'd stood as both mayor and ward councillor for the newly-formed ward in the October 2022 local election, but missed out on the top job, finishing fifth out of sixth, with 541 votes.

Her resignation triggers a by-election in the Arrowtown-Kawarau Ward and details regarding that process, including timings, will be published in the near future.

A media statement from QLDC, says Shetty wishes the new Council success in the term ahead. The next major full council meeting is next Thursday.
