Rescue helicopter airlifts teenage mountain biker

A St John’s spokesperson says a teenage mountain biker was airlifted from the Wynyard Jump Park at Fernhill in a serious condition at 1.32pm on Monday (7 October) and taken to Lakes District Hospital.

A 60-year-old woman was also airlifted off the Shirt Tail Track near Kingston just after 1pm on Saturday (5 October) after a fall. The spokesperson says she suffered minor injuries.

A man in his 20s was also airlifted to Lakes District Hospital in a moderate condition after a motor vehicle accident at Gibbston at 6:22pm on Sunday (6 October).

Bar bouncer punched in the face

A 19-year-old Auckland man allegedly assaulted a 32-year-old Queenstown security staff member outside Zephyr Bar at 2am on Friday (4 October) after he’d been escorted out of the bar.

Sergeant Tracy Haggart says the offender punched the security guard in the face twice after words were exchanged. The victim suffered pain to his face afterward and the Auckland man was charged with assault and dealt with in the Queenstown District Court on Monday.

Traffic stop uncovers meth utensils and imitation firearm

A 57-year-old Queenstown man, stopped on a routine traffic stop at 10pm on Friday (4 October) at Lake Hayes, near Ladies Mile, ended up being arrested for possession of utensils for methamphetamine or amphetamine use, unlawfully carrying an imitation firearm and failing to carry out obligations in relation to a computer search.

Haggart says officers noticed the drug paraphernalia in the vehicle once it stopped and a search located utensils and an imitation firearm. The man will appear in the Queenstown District Court on 4 November.

Shotover Street burglar left his details

Police are on the hunt for a 37-year-old male, who left his details, after a burglary in a locked upstairs office space on Shotover Street between 4.30pm last Thursday (3 October) and 8.20pm on Friday (4 October).

Personal items belonging to a staff member were taken. Haggart says the woman located the items in another locked office space in the same building where she also found documentation papers in the name of the suspect. He’s believed to have left Queenstown and Police inquiries are continuing.

Alarm activation scares off Frankton burglar

Another would-be burglar fled when the alarm activated after breaking into the back of Summerfield’s Pharmacy at Frankton Corner and entering the building between 6pm on Saturday, 5 October, and 8.50am on Sunday, 6 October.

Drink driving crashes - Devil’s Staircase and Ladies Mile

A 56-year-old Waimate man blew 676mcgs on the Kingston Road, near Devil’s Staircase, after Police were called to a vehicle collision at 10.51am on Monday, 7 October. Haggart says the man had been towing a camper that had become detached from the ute he was allegedly driving and had crashed into a bank. He was breath tested.

Charges are pending

A 21-year-old Cromwell male, who was involved in a traffic accident on State Highway 6 between Frankton and Ladies Mile, allegedly blew 600mcgs after losing control around a bend on a wet road at 5am on Saturday (5 October). The vehicle slid off the road and into a bank, suffering moderate damage, but there were no injuries. Charges are pending.

Drink driving

A 20-year-old Invercargill male blew 802mcgs at 4.53am on Saturday (5 October) on Lake Esplanade and will face a charge of driving with an excess breath alcohol level in the Queenstown District Court on 1 November.

A 32-year-old Queenstown man was also charged after he blew 706mcgs on the Frankton-Ladies Mile State Highway at 4.54pm last Wednesday, (2 October). He was convicted, placed under an alcohol interlock order and disqualified from driving for six months.

Traffic accidents

Police dealt with a number of traffic crashes, including one involving four vehicles on State Highway 6 at Gibbston Valley at 6.53am on Friday (4 October). Haggart says the vehicles nose to tailed in the wet weather causing minor damage, but nobody was injured.

A 38-year-old Chinese man failed to stop in time for traffic stopped at the one-way Edith Cavell Bridge at Arthurs Point at 4pm on Friday, (4 October), colliding with the back of the vehicle ahead of him. Nobody was injured but both vehicles suffered moderate damage.

A 21-year-old Queenstown female also collided with the back of another vehicle that had stopped on State Highway 6, near Kawarau Bridge, at Frankton, for a dog that ran across the road. Nobody was injured but both vehicles suffered moderate damage. The young woman was given a written traffic warning.

Kayaker dies at Milford Sound

A man, who was kayaking on Milford Sound, died after a water-related incident on Tuesday, 8 October.

Police say emergency services were alerted to two people in need of assistance in the water at around 12.50pm. One ambulance, one operations manager and two helicopters responded.

Another person involved received minor injuries and a St John’s spokesperson says they were assessed and treated at the scene.

Police say their thoughts are with the man’s family during this difficult time. No further details were available, and the death is being referred to the Coroner.
