Happiness House: A Happy Space for the Community

A warm and friendly atmosphere was the first thing I felt upon entering Happiness House, the community support center in Queenstown that, now in its 30th year, remains focused on helping those in need.

Though we live in a city many describe as a paradise, there are many people in unfavorable circumstances, facing financial problems, homelessness, or simply going through a challenging period due to visa situations.

As members of such a diverse community, disconnection sometimes occurs. That's partly what this organization focuses on, tirelessly working to create spaces for recreation, companionship, and mutual support, with activities to meet people, share, and provide support in various ways.

Steph Burbidge, coordinator of Happiness House, highlights that over the years the organization has evolved and adapted to the community. Not relying on government funding, it sustains itself through community grants and other contributions, allowing them to be flexible and effectively respond to emerging needs.

The incredible work they achieve is thanks to the passion and dedication of their team, comprised of just four people: manager Léna Boss, from Switzerland; coordinator Steph Burbidge, from the UK; as well as staff members Ellie Forest, from the United States, and Lucca Rodríguez, from Uruguay.

They are joined by around 15 volunteers, whom Steph describes as the "secret strenght" of Happiness House.

The entity offers various programs and services. Community support workers listen to those in need and make connections with relevant organizations that can provide solutions or guidance.

Additionally, Happiness House offers a variety of free activities such as the "Cook Around the World" cooking classes (every other Tuesday at 10:00 am); a knitting group (Wednesday at 10:00 am), and during the summer, the "community garden" teaches food cultivation to all who want to learn this skill.

The magic generated in these instances is reflected in the diverse conversations among people from different cultures, genders, and generations. A beautiful way to connect and feel accompanied, as well as to make new friends in Queenstown.

Another of its standout programs is "Produce Day", where every Friday, with prior registration, food is offered based on a system of respect and trust, promoting dignity above all.

Happiness House also maintains a second-hand store, which continuously accepts donations and sells at low prices, helping to finance the center's free activities.

Steph, who started as a volunteer, deeply appreciates the cultural richness and diversity of the community. As an immigrant, she understands the labor challenges and values the opportunity to connect and learn from others. A mutual aid ecosystem that is fundamental to the functioning of this center.

The doors of Happiness House are always open to those seeking support, friendship, or simply a place to feel at home. Because in this corner of Queenstown, where human connections and mutual support are valued, everyone is welcome.
