Basic Guide for New Arrivals

In recent months, we have seen many changes in immigration policies, which include additional requirements for obtaining visas and work permits, as well as increased controls in the application processes. Although this may seem daunting, it is crucial to stay informed and prepared, especially if you are new to the country.

This week, I spoke with two young people who have just arrived in New Zealand on a Working Holiday Visa, and while talking to them, I realized that the information they had about new immigration rules and how to proceed with their future applications was far from reality.

I was struck by how poorly informed they were and that much of what they knew was because they had read it in Facebook groups or “someone” told them or “they heard it somewhere.” You also see a lot of inaccurate information irresponsibly disseminated in various social media groups, leaving more than a few in anguish and despair, not knowing what to do before arriving or even when their visa time is about to expire.

Many people from Latin America do not come just to enjoy a year of Working Holiday and then continue traveling. Many see this opportunity as a new beginning in life, and for that, it is essential to seek information from appropriate channels. There are resources and local organizations that can help us navigate these processes, many of which have been mentioned in previous columns.

Therefore, some recommendations for new arrivals:

Get well-informed: It is essential to seek information from reliable sources and not depend solely on what is said on social media. The official pages of Immigration New Zealand and local organizations are good starting points.

Learn English: The desperation of many for not being able to find a job is often due to not having a basic command of the language. It is essential to at least understand and communicate in English to be able to write a CV or go to an interview.

Attend workshops and meetings: Participating in community workshops and meetings can be very useful to keep up with changes and learn how to adapt to them.

Follow the rules: It is important to follow the rules imposed by Immigration New Zealand and ensure compliance with all legal requirements. Often, due to the idiosyncrasies of our countries, we try to find the easy way out or methods to “trick” the system. Please do not attempt this because many of these experiences have ended in deportation.

Arriving to live in a new country is exciting, but it can also be overwhelming. Staying well-informed and finding support is a good way to face these new challenges. And as I have reiterated on several occasions, the Latin community is large and always willing to help.
