Basketball is my love

In Queenstown there are several ways to join the community and many alternatives to stay active and entertained. One of them is basketball, an undeniably demanding sport, but it also provides numerous benefits for both our physical and mental health.

Coming from the city of July 9th in Argentina, Mauro Cabalcabue has dedicated himself completely to this sport, from his participation in a basketball committee in his city, to his certification as a coach and commitment to the development of women's basketball in his country. A testimony of his dedication and his desire to share his love for basketball with others.

Mauro arrived in New Zealand a little over a year ago, having lived in the United States. He found work in Queenstown and a few months after joining his family.

His first activity was to look for people who shared his taste for playing. After obtaining his work visa, he concretely decided to form the “Cobras Basketball Club Queenstown”.

The response he got to the call was totally unexpected, but very positive. “Empecé to convene through Facebook groups of Latinos and become llenó”, he says. After a while, the club started training and participating in tournaments.

With the initiative underway, the practice showed that many women lack experience compared to men, which sometimes generates frustration in mixed games. For this reason, he decided to set up a female team, as “it seems to me that it is a beautiful space to run, have fun and learn something new. And how they say to many of them who have become: the one who falls in love, is going to fall in love with the basketball and the one who is not obviously going to abandon him, but I give all of me so that the first option becomes, if they fall in love with him basketball.”

Regarding the importance of creating an inclusive and accessible environment through sports, Mauro highlights that “I found myself with a Latino community that was very receptive to the proposals. In the United States, I suffered a lot of discrimination from the Latino community, but here, they are trapped.”

Basketball helps to increase resistance, develop motor skills, physical and mental agility, coordination, care for the cardiovascular system and improve reflex speed. Furthermore, it reduces stress, releases endorphins and encourages teamwork and companionship.

If you are interested in participating, as an expert or amateur, the training sessions are at Queenstown Events Centre: nights between 19:00 and 20:00 for men; times 18:00-19:30 hours for women, and times 19:30-21:00 hours for men. The activity is free and only money is collected between everyone to pay for the farm.

Mauro's story shows us how sharing his passion for basketball, he has formed a beautiful sports community. “I don't live my life without basketball, I'm a fanatic of amateur basketball and what it generates. I always say that I fall in love with the basketball and you are my love.”
