A new multi-use Buckler Burn trail and bridge linking the Glenorchy township to the Whakaari Conservation Area is now open for locals and visitors.

Until now, there was no formal trail connecting the two, despite the conservation area attracting over 10,000 visitors annually.

This new infrastructure changes that, improving access for locals, supporting sustainable tourism, and enhancing safety by keeping pedestrians and cyclists off the highway.

It's been made possible by a $220,000 grant from the Lottery Grants Board to the Glenorchy Trails Trust, and marks the largest investment in the history of the Trust.

The new Buckler Burn Trail has been built to New Zealand Cycle Trails standards, making it accessible to walkers, cyclists, and wheelchair users.

“With more families settling in Glenorchy, the need for safe and accessible recreational infrastructure has grown. This trail connects our community to nature and protects lives,” Steve Hewland, Chair of the Trust, says.
