Police have confirmed that one person died in this morning's crash on State Highway 6 / Gibbston.

The crash was reported at 7.42am, between the Crown Range turnoff and the bungy bridge.

Another person is in a serious condition. It's understood the crash was a head-on accident involving two vehicles.

"The road is expected to be closed for some time, motorists are advised to expect delays and follow detours," a police spokesperson says.

"The Serious Crash Unit is at the scene."

Waka Kotahi advised motorists to allow at least another hour travel time between Queenstown and Cromwell, with detours via the Crown Range.
