The two children reported missing in Mavora Lakes area have been located and are safe and well.

Inspector Mike Bowman, Area Commander Southland Police, says searchers located the two children, aged 11 and eight, at about 10am today, one-and-a-half kilometres from the campground in a clearing near the lake.

"They have been transported back to the Search and Rescue base and are being assessed by medical staff.

"Police wish to thank everyone who was involved in the search overnight and this morning, including volunteers who travelled from around the Southern region to join the search."

The two children, an 11-year-old girl and an eight-year-old boy, had failed to return from a bush walk from the campground at the northern end of Mavora Lakes Road, Southland, at 2.30pm.

Police were notified at 5.15pm on Saturday, and teams searched through the night. At first light, 30 more searchers were deployed. The team included police, search dogs, and volunteers from Land Search and Rescue and Amateur Radio Emergency Communications. A helicopter also helped the search effort, which was ultimately successful.
