LUMA Emerging Artist Programme winners announced

Innovative artists have been named winners of the LUMA Emerging Artist Programme.
Comet Collab and MISSY will perform at the annual event which attracts up to 50,000 people each year. Over 20 artists applied to play at LUMA, which returns to in Queenstown Gardens from 30 May – 3 June, 2024.
Lara Thomas, from Comet Collab, describes it as an artistic dream come true.
She and creative partner Bobbie Gray have a passion for reimaging urban spaces and sees the mentorship offered by the programme as a catalyst for artistic growth.
"We believe in the power of art to transform spaces and want to transport our audience to enchanting realms. Our aim is to connect communities with the beauty of the natural world."
The pair believe Queenstown Gardens is the perfect setting to do so and will be creating an installation which follows the life cycle of a flower.
"Our immersive experience connects viewers with nature, sustainability, and the art of metamorphosis in a concise and impactful journey. The work is homage to Aotearoa's natural heritage and a symbol of environmental mindfulness."
The duo pride themselves on their commitment to sustainable art and the installations are constructed from repurposed materials, primarily single-use plastic bottles.
Artist Lara Thomas is excited to be involved in LUMA 2024
Joining them in the Gardens will be dark pop artist MISSY.
She decided to apply after attending and being "blown away" by LUMA 2023 where her sister was performing. "It was such a beautiful, enchanting experience, the lights, and projects on display were all very impressive."
She will present a set themed around tarot readings using a mix of sample triggering, live looping vocals, and basic keys – all projected and linked with the surrounding forest.
LEAP Coordinator Celine Van der Eecken says the team were impressed by this year’s applicants.
"The talent and calibre shining through really was impressive and while it was a tough job narrowing down the contestants we are really pleased to be making this announcement.
"As a creative event we truly believe we are helping identify and shape the next wave of New Zealand talent.
"We look forward to welcoming Comet Collab and MISSY to the LUMA whanau."
