Kawarau Gorge to be closed overnight, for two months

State Highway 6 through Kawarau Gorge will be closed overnight for eight weeks from 31 August as work is carried out to fix an under slip at at Scrubby Corner.
The site, just north of Goldfield Mining Centre, will be closed 9pm to 6am, Sunday to Thursday, through to 23 October.
It will be opened on the hour during the closure periods to allowed queued traffic to pass. The road will be open at all other times, including day time and Fridays 6am to Sundays 9pm.
Motorists should prepare for delays of up to an hour when travelling through the area during these closures. Any waiting traffic will be piloted through a single lane at the site. Oversize vehicles or loads will be accommodated as long as they adhere to their permit requirements of notification, so that the crew can coordinate with the operator and assist them through the narrow corridor.
The fix "requires the pinning back, strengthening and reinforcing of the current crib retaining wall", New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotah media manager Jarrod Booker says.
"This will be achieved by boring anchors through the existing retaining wall into rock and structurally connecting those anchors into the existing crib wall."
The work being carried out by Aspiring Highways.
"We thank people in advance for their patience and care travelling through this site. People can view the latest state highway restrictions and conditions at our Journey Planner site," Booker says.
