Firefighters are battling a house fire in the roof space of a property opposite Queenstown Central retail park, Frankton.

Emergency crews were called to the two-storey house at 1.25pm this afternoon. Fire crews from Frankton, Queenstown and Arrowtown are in attendance, along with St John ambulance and police,

"It's fire within the roof space of the building that we're currently working to extinguish," South Island fire communications shift manager Alex Norris says.

"We've got ambulance on scene and have notified police as well, due to the proximity of the motorway (sic)."

Three patients, all in minor conditions, have been assessed by St John paramedics. They did not require hospital treatment.

The property is off Frankton-Ladies Mile, State Highway 6, on the stretch between the NPD roundabout and Five Mile / Queenstown Central roundabout.

The fire has sent smoke billowing into the sky, near Kmart, attracting a crowd of concerned onlookers and backing up traffic across Queenstown.

NZTA is advising that SH6 is closed near the intersection with Grant Road due to a fire. Traffic should still be able to detour via Lucas Place > Hawthorne Drive > SH6.

However, there's long delays for motorists, with that road gridlocked even on normal Friday afternoons.
