Police have now confirmed the names of the two people who died in a crash on Malaghans Road on Thursday.

They were Simran Shiuagani Mala, 25, and Jamie William Pitman, 35, both from Frankton, Queenstown.

"Our thoughts are with their family and friends in this tragic time," a police spokesperson says.

"The Serious Crash Unit attended, and investigations into the enquiries of the crash are ongoing."

Emergency services rushed to the scene at 10pm, including three ambulances, a helicopter and local fire crews.

Simran Mala and Jamie Pitman, understood to be a couple, were found dead at the scene, on the section of road between Dalefield Road and Hunter Road. Five others were injured.

The accident involved two vehicles, including a van from nearby golf resort Millbrook, but the deceased were in the other vehicle.
