Understanding ACC: Your Rights and Support in Queenstown
The Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) is New Zealand’s no-fault injury cover scheme. It exists to support everyone in Aotearoa who is injured - whether you’re injured at home, work, on the road, or during recreation.
All taxpayers contribute to ACC. If you’re on wages, the levy is automatically deducted with your tax. If you’re self-employed, ACC sends you a separate invoice based on your income and job risk level.
What is ACC and What Does It Do?
ACC helps people recover from injuries by providing financial and practical support. Instead of needing to make a legal claim or prove someone was at fault, ACC steps in to help you get back on your feet after an injury.
What Can ACC Provide?
Medical and rehab costs (e.g. GP visits, physiotherapy, surgery)
Income compensation (up to 80% of your usual earnings if you can’t work)
Help at home, like cleaning or personal care
Childcare support if you’re unable to care for your children
Travel costs to get to treatment or to help get you to the supermarket if you can’t drive while injured
Support returning to work
Lump sum payments for permanent impairment
What Does ACC Cover?
ACC covers a wide range of accidental injuries including:
Slips, trips, falls, sports and car accidents
Work injuries and gradual process injuries (like repetitive strain)
Burns, cuts, broken bones
Support from the result of sexual harm
Injuries caused by medical treatment
It’s important to note that ACC generally does not cover illnesses (like cold or flu), conditions related to ageing, or mental health conditions that aren’t linked to a physical injury - unless under specific circumstances.
What Are You Entitled To?
Anyone injured in New Zealand may be entitled to ACC cover. If your claim is accepted, the support you receive will depend on your situation, but you always have a right to fair treatment and to challenge decisions you disagree with.
