An investigation is underway after two Queenstown helicopters nearly collided in mid-air.

The choppers, operated by The Helicopter Line and Over The Top, got too close to each other during hover-taxi departure from Queenstown Airport's southern apron area on 27 December.

The pilot of The Helicopter Line Eurocopter AS350 ZK-IDB took evasive action to avoid colliding with Over The Top's Eurocopter EC130 ZK-IUP.

The Transport Accident Investigation Commission has confirmed it is investigating the incident.

"TAIC opened this inquiry on 17 January after gathering evidence following notification from the Civil Aviation Authority on 12 January 2023", TAIC said in a statement.
