It's one of the coldest mornings so far in 2024 for Queenstown Lakes and the region, with temperatures well-below freezing.

Temperatures dropped to around -3°C overnight across the district, while Arrowtown hit a frosty -5.3°C. Middlemarch was the coldest spot on Otago overnight, reaching -9.0°C, while Kokonga hit -8.2°C.

Current conditions (8.45am) in Queenstown Lakes overall are -2.5°C but that feels like -6°C according to the MetService. It recommends four layers of clothing, including a windproof jacket, although there are only light winds of 9km/h.

The day is expected to be "mainly fine with increasing high cloud. Morning frost. Light winds."

Thursday has "rain developing in the morning. Light winds" with a possibility of snow in higher elevations onwards from Thursday, according to this report Snow on its way from the Wānaka App, although there are no snow road warnings or severe weather warnings in place as yet.

Snow guns are blaring at The Remarkables, Coronet Peak and over in Cardrona. Both The Remarkables and Cardrona are due to open this weekend.

"Our staff are now onboard and training for winter 2024!" reads the daily update from The Remarkables. "We are excited about this week's weather with snow and colder temperatures (for snowmaking) forecast ahead of our scheduled opening on Saturday 15th June - we'll keep you updated as the week progresses."
