The body of man missing in the water at Glenorchy has been found by the Police National Dive Squad.

The Dive Squad recovered the body this afternoon at about 3.50pm.

A visitor from Australia, he was helping a child in the water at about 4pm yesterday, Thursday, 19 February, when he got into trouble himself.

The child was saved by another member of the public but the man did not surface and, despite the efforts of other swimmers, people on jet boats, and a helicopter, could not be found.

It comes just a week after another person died in similar circumstances in Lake Wakatipu at Glenorchy.

"Police’s thoughts are with the man’s whanau and loved ones at this difficult time", a police spokesperson says.

The man’s death will be referred to the Coroner.

Last Friday, Linkin Kisling, 48, of Wanaka, died near the same spot, north of Glenorchy Wharf, where the Rees River meets Lake Wakatipu.

Kisling, also known as Leroy Kaaho, was trying to save his 10-year-old son but was pulled under the water by strong currents.

The boy survived after being pulled ashore by a member of the public.
