Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown, on air with RNZ now, says "there are injuries to members of the public and a police officer".

He said he understood the incident was being treated as a homicide.

Brown says the police have shrunk the cordon back to one construction site and police are searching through there now to ensure things are contained.

Brown told Nine to Noon there was no suggestion that there was more than one shooter.

He says all FIFA personnel and international football teams are safe and have been accounted for.
