Collaboration brings together diverse viewpoints and expertise, fostering innovative solutions that might not emerge from a single perspective. This is where Wao Summit stands proud, and tall.

The Summit is one of the only events of its kind in New Zealand that connects leaders in business and community to discuss these viewpoints and spark action. The summit has become a catalyst for the solutions that have been inspired by the conversations that take place during the week.

For seven years now the Wao Summit has set about providing a forum and empowering climate-focused entrepreneurs and organisations to pursue viable, climate-focused initiatives and innovative solutions that have resulted in reduced impact on the environment in our region.

SUC Free Wanaka Spearheaded by not-for-profit Plastic Free Wanaka, motivated members of the hospitality community and supported by Wastebusters, the community led SUC Free Wanaka campaign was launched at the first Wao Summit in 2018.  The initiative focuses on encouraging both locals and visitors to adopt more sustainable practices by using reusable cups instead of disposable ones. Effectively becoming Single Use Cup (SUC) free. The effort is part of a broader environmental movement in Wānaka to minimise waste and promote sustainability.

By targeting single-use cups, which are a significant contributor to landfill waste, SUC Free Wanaka aims to reduce the environmental impact of disposable items. The campaign likely involves partnerships with local cafes and businesses to offer incentives for customers who bring their own cups and may include educational efforts to raise awareness about the environmental benefits of reducing single-use waste.

This initiative aligns with the growing global awareness of the environmental costs associated with single-use plastics and other disposable products, encouraging the community to adopt more sustainable habits.

Better Building Group: The Better Building Working Group was established after the 2018 Wao Summit and inspired by the SUC Free Wānaka campaign. Composed of architects, designers, engineers, builders, tradies, developers, suppliers, Council representatives and community, the group have set a vision for 2050 in the building ecosystem and priority actions including tackling construction waste, moving towards a circular economy, promoting climate smart building practices and improving partnership and collaboration.

The Group’s Steering Committee consists of 18 members with over 40 wider group members from various disciplines of the building industry. This year's event will focus on the current state of play, addressing future challenges and reimagining what a future system could look like. The five workshops in the afternoon will provide a practical, hands on opportunity to address carbon accounting, homestar masterclass, biophilic design, integrated design and materials circularity.

Love Wanaka & Love Queenstown: Love Wanaka & Love Queenstown: The Love Wānaka and Love Queenstown community funds have been driven by Lake Wanaka Tourism and Destination Queenstown to connect our visitors and visitor industry to projects of impact in the region by raising funds to support those who are tackling the climate crisis in Wānaka and Queenstown. They are about supporting a unique, localised response to the challenges and opportunities of high-volume visitation, with targeted and strategic funding to those who know best.

Both funds focus on projects that improve the wellbeing of Wanaka's natural environment. They support initiatives related to climate, conservation and biodiversity protections and regeneration.

The fund often backs projects that foster community spirit, promote sustainability, and address local needs.

Both funds rely on donations and community involvement to achieve their objectives, and they play a crucial role in nurturing the vibrant and supportive atmosphere of their respective regions. The activation of these funds came about from discussions at Wao Summit and via the development of the region’s Destination Management Plan in the regenerative tourism space.

Wanaka Community Workshop: Ben Acland was the driver behind setting up the Wanaka Community Workshop. A founding member of the BBWG, Ben’s idea was to provide a dynamic community space dedicated to promoting sustainable practices and supporting mental well-being. By emphasising the principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle, the workshop provides an environment where individuals can repurpose materials, engage in creative projects, and minimise waste. This commitment to sustainability helps members contribute positively to the environment while also gaining hands-on experience with various tools and techniques.

In addition to its focus on environmental stewardship, the workshop plays a vital role in enhancing mental health within the community. It offers a welcoming and supportive atmosphere where people can engage in fulfilling activities, learn new skills, and connect with others. This sense of community and purpose not only fosters personal growth but also creates a space where individuals can find solace and build resilience through creative expression and shared experience.

Earlier this year, the ripple effect of these initiatives has started to reach into other communities across New Zealand. There are active discussions at the national level to see about rolling the BBWG model out to other communities.

In May, Wao GM Monique Kelly and Better Building Lead Aaron Thule travelled to the Hawkes Bay to speak at the Environment Hubs Aotearoa North Island Hui. Monique and Aaron introduced members of the Te Ika-a-Māui hub to the Wao Systems Shift mahi and showcased how the work of Wao has built a network that has amplified action to combat climate change.

What will come about from this year's summit? Could it be you who kick starts something new?
