The Lakes Weekly Bulletin began in June 2005 after two very intelligent and dynamic businessmen identified the need for a more cost effective way for local business, community groups and individuals to get their message out there.
Starting with a 4 page edition and 400 copies, it began picking up speed and before long the phone was ringing hot with people wanting to advertise.
The Lakes Weekly Bulletin now prints over 4,500 copies, with between 36 and 48 pages per issue, and has become one of the Wakatipu’s best read publications. The Bulletin is hand delivered every week to over 1200 businesses located in the Queenstown CBD, Gorge Road, Frankton, Glenda Drive, Remarkables Park, and Arrowtown. It is also available at strategically placed pick up points around the district at key supermarkets and petrol stations.
Over 400 “casual” advertisements are received every week with people looking to sell or buy cars, boats, skis, clothes the list goes on, looking for flats or flatmates, or simply to tell someone they “love” them! A solid customer base of satisfied display advertisers also continues to grow.
Addressing the concerns and issues facing the community through an honest and frank editorial often produces strong reactions. However, the content for this usually comes from conversations with residents and visitors, and the objective is not to sensationalise or denigrate opinions or actions, but simply to address them with the hope it may stimulate positive debate with positive outcomes.
The famous Lone Star “Whinge” page has been the readers’ favourite allowing people to get whatever is bugging them, off their chest and anonymously if they prefer. Other popular content includes the most comprehensive Gig Guide in town, and the Winnies photo page has seen the Bulletin taken to all corners of the globe as readers strive to win a $50 voucher…!
