An Australian travel company have just released some statistics regarding over tourism around the world. Croatia comes in first with 14 tourists per local resident. Second is Iceland with 6 to 1. Hang on a minute! Queenstown has 34 tourists to every resident. That was according to the council’s calculations last year, and it has to have increased since then. Does that mean that we officially have over tourism by a very big margin? If we get a bigger airport, just imagine, we could make that up to 50 to 1! Isn’t being both the chairman of a large tourist company and a mayor of a town that is suffering from over tourism, a conflict of interest?
