St John Health Shuttle

St John Health Shuttle

The St John’s Ambulance Services has always been at the core of what we do, but as future healthcare needs evolve, so has our Community Health Services program to be instrumental in building a more resilient community. Community Health Services operates every day to benefit community health outcomes and education services. True to our vision and values, St John is busy throughout the community as we provide programmes to help people in many ways. In some cases, they’re practical, like transport to health appointments; at other times they’re about emotional health, like providing regular contact with a caring friend. These services are run primarily by volunteers and are often free of charge.

Our community transport needs, to access healthcare is accelerating. The St John Health Shuttle is a free community service that transports people to and from essential medical and health-related appointments. The service is operated by volunteers and is free-of-charge; however, as always a donation is really appreciated to help cover costs.

The St John Health Shuttles fills a real community need, especially in rural areas. In many locations, there has been a gap in service delivery for people who require an affordable transportation option to enable positive health and wellbeing outcomes.

The goal of the Health Shuttle service is to support timely access to health services and increase the opportunity for independent living. Without this service, access to health care would decline and social isolation and stress in the community would increase.

At St John we strive to achieve the following six core social impacts with the health shuttle service:
• Improved access to health care
• Improved health and general wellbeing
• Increased social contact and connection
• Fewer missed health appointments
• Reduced stress, gives peace of mind
• Members of the community living independently longer.

Our Local Wakatipu Health Shuttle has been servicing the local Community since 2012. Funded and initiated by the South Island Four Square group. Les and Bev Dawson Wakatipu Health Shuttle team leaders say “personally we haven’t been with the shuttle from the start but several drivers still driving have been.

We were given the “team Leaders“ role about 4 years ago and with the fantastic team of positive local drivers the St John Health shuttle team are able to assist many locals and  tourists  with daily return trips to Invercargill for their medical treatments.”

The Wakatipu Health Shuttle travels to Invercargill Monday-Friday for all health-related appointments.
