Fairway to Heaven!
Fairway to Heaven!
If you’ve lived in Queenstown more than a single day, no doubt you’ve observed the steady flow of townsfolk wandering in the direction of the Queenstown Gardens, frisbees in hand and grins upon lips. Where they’re going - or where they’ve come from - is the Queenstown Disc Golf course located in the Gardens, to participate in one of the greatest leisure activities known to man.
Disc Golf follows all the same principles and basic rules used in ball golf. At its core, it involves casting frisbees known as ‘discs’ along a designated fairway and ultimately into the chains of a raised metal basket. Free to play, requiring nothing but a disc and pleasant attitude, disc golf has won the hearts of millions around the world. It is one of the most rapidly progressing sports in the world, and is a pastime now embraced by more than 30,000 kiwis across NZ.
Is it any wonder, then, that the Queenstown Disc Golf course is the holy grail of New Zealand disc golf? Home to New Zealand’s first - and most iconic - permanent course, the Queenstown Gardens has views like no other. First installed in 1996, The Queenstown Gardens has seen more than one million players taking on the legendary course, pitting themselves against the perils of the pines whilst soaking their eyeballs with the majesty of the background vistas.
So what better place than the Queenstown Gardens for New Zealand’s greatest Disc Golf Event? Previously scheduled in March but postponed due to the antics of an unmentionable pandemic, the 25th Annual Queenstown Classic Disc Golf tournament will now be taking place within the Queenstown Gardens this September on the 26th and 27th. Mayor Jim Boult will be attending the opening and playing the honorary first shot. Proudly sponsored for 23 years by The Helicopter Line and graciously supported by the Queenstown Council, this event is the longest running and most prestigious disc golf tournament on the NZ DG tour. And this year it’s going to be a big one! Featuring a bounty of amazing prizes from local sponsors, an augmented course, clinics, games, stalls, and disc golf battles between New Zealand’s top players, this event is a must for competitors and spectators alike! If you want to know what all the hype is about, come down and check it out! See you on the course!
